Ah, European soft porn, just the ticket when you want your sleaze covered in a fine veneer of literary respectability. While this one is probably not based on a novel, it steals a couple of scenes from Emmanuel, so close enough besides which there is a book in the opening scene. Okay, so it is a book with lots of pictures of Pompeii porn, but you can clearly see there is some writing on the pages. The film opens in a convent school with a bunch of girls looking at the aforementioned book. We get introduced to our heroine when she is accused of owning the book. She is quickly brought to the Mother Superior who is clearly intent on punishing her. This can only lead to one thing, an announcement that she has inherited a fortune. Yeah, not what I was hoping for either. Turns out our girl's only surviving family member died and left her with a string of brothels and a plantation. Before you can say "get the switch" we are flying to Hong Kong.
Shortly upon arriving in Hong Kong at the home of some business relations we get to see Olivia Pascal naked for the first time. Standing very still, her clothes are removed like a statue being unveiled. While she is gorgeous, acting like a statue is about the extent of her acting ability. She barely changes expression through the entire movie despite massive changes of fortune and even an attempted rape.
Which brings me to one of the main problems I have with Vanessa and its ilk. The plots and associated actions make no sense to me at all. The attempted rape comes after the manager of plantation asks her to let him have the plantation. She quite naturally says no and he immediately grabs her and starts ripping off her clothes. When someone comes to her rescue, she hides behind her attacker. No mention of the incident is made through the rest of the movie. To make matters worse, the plot is moved along by monologues. One character or another will suddenly start talking about selling the brothels or how the plantation manager's lawsuit is progressing.
Fortunately there is ample nudity in the film to offset the stupidity. We even get two flashbacks to the convent. The film really has nothing to offer except for sex and nudity but at least our heroine is not mean spirited and cruel to the people around her, which is a fairly common theme in some of these movies.
